In gemological education, some institutions are very well-known brands, such as Gemological Institute of America (GIA),Swiss Foundation for the Research on Gemstones (SSEF), Asian Institute of the Gemological Sciences AIGS, etc.

The aforementioned institutions are world pioneers in identifying and grading diamonds, producing high technology gemological equipment and identifying colored stones.

History of Gemology

It is appropriate, to enter the fascinating world of gemology education, to start with its history. We will explain the reason for this merit in the following.

We examine the history of gemology in three topics, which are:

  1. The importance of the history of gemology
  2. A History of World Gemology

The importance of the history of gemology

Suppose you, like a professional, have documented your business for forty years over time and stored its information on a hard disk with a capacity of one terabyte. Storing this information has many important benefits, for example:

  • When a problem arises, it takes time and money to solve the problem, depending on the complexity of the problem. When we document the problem resolution information, if the problem recurs years later, we can refer to the documentation and solve the problem without repeating the double cost.
  • We can use documentation to train employees and … .

On the other hand, you know that all your business information, such as marketing information, financial documents, research and development data, customer and sales information, etc., are stored in hard disk memory layers. At any time, by examining this hard disk, anyone can learn about your business framework and everything that has been done in this business for the past forty years and make sure that there is no other content outside of this memory card. This valuable information helps us to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of our business and its opportunities and threats at any time and formulate a suitable strategy to improve it.

The history of industries are like these hard disks. Histories help professionals to get a complete understanding of their industry, so they become more familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of their industry, and with a correct and comprehensive insight, they can adopt their appropriate strategy.

Therefore, to enter the fascinating world of gemology education, it is appropriate to start with its history.

In an attractive idea, we present the history of gemology in such a way that the contents are expressed with proper titles and classification. Presenting this classification was time-consuming and required the study and review of many sources so that we can finally offer the best to you, the esteemed audience of TerrificGem website.

A History of Gemology

The history of gemology is in the form of a book, but in this part we are trying to have an overview of it, with the approach of writing the most important content.

Therefore, the history of gemology is given in the following three links, which are:

History of gemstones discovery

History of synthetic gemstones

History of the development of gemology

Standard Jewelry

How to develop standards and monitor them

For the exchange and trade of goods, standards are defined, relying on which traders can have a common language and trade more easily, and also end consumers have access to high-quality goods.

Below is a picture of the Acceleration Body, so that you can familiarize with its organizational chart.

International accreditation forum

The International Accreditation Forum is called IAF, which advances its goals by using two arms, ISO/CASCO and ILAC.

The ISO Organization produces and communicates the standards, and ILAC is the organization that oversees the implementation of the standards by Accredited Laboratories (Standard Collaborating Laboratories).

IAF = International Accreditation Forum

ISO = International Organization for Standardization

CASCO = ISO’s Committee Conformity Assessment

ILAC = International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation

Regional Accreditation Organizations operate under the supervision of the IAF and are the ones that support national accrediting organizations.

But on the other hand, the ISO organization is not able to develop all the global standards by itself, so this organization takes help from trade organizations that operate under the supervision of the United Nations to develop global standards.

The Confederation of International Jewelry (CIBJO) has developed gems and jewelry standards at the request of ISO and made them available to ISO for promulgation.

ISO standards come with the suffixes ISO and IEC.

In fact, after studying the history of gemology and jewelry, it is appropriate to know their standards so that we can have a yardstick for further education.

Concepts of Gemology

After reviewing the history of gemology and familiarizing with jewelry standards, we want to answer an important question!

Who is an expert gemologist?

An expert gemologist is proficient in that part of the basic sciences of geology, physics and chemistry that is related to gemology, in addition to that he has learned the science of gemology and always follows the latest in the science of gemology. And finally, a capable gemologist increases his experience daily by identifying and grading different gemstones!

But some points need to be explained:

  • A professional gemologist, in addition to the above-mentioned sciences, must also know art, because art is an irreplaceable part of jewelry art-industry, therefore,

Gemology at the depth of 1000 is an interdisciplinary science and a capable gemologist is a knowledgeable artist.

  • As mentioned, three basic sciences are used in gemology, but the basic sciences are divided into six categories, which are:

Mathematics, chemistry, physics, geology, astronomy and biology.

  • Geological science has five subcategories as follows:
  1. Mineralogy – petrology (lithology) – geotology (the study of economic reserves of minerals and exploitable stones.);
  2. Geochemistry;
  3. Construction geology;
  4. Paleontology and stratigraphy;
  5. Quaternary geology (from about 2.5 million years ago to present).
